OVAL BRAND LOW-PROFILE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS

oval brand fire extinguishersJay L Harman Fire Equipment is the only distributor of OVAL low-profile fire extinguishers in all of West Texas and New Mexico. OVAL fire extinguishers enable easy compliance with the Life Safety Code and 4 inch projecting object limits, as now required by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). In fact,OVAL Brand fire extinguishers are the FIRST and ONLY fire extinguishers that are built for and comply with the recently updated NFPA-101 Life Safety Code (2012 edition), ADA, and CMS requirements. OVAl Brand low-profile fire extinguishers provide various benefits for a wide variety of different end users.

Last year CMS required all healthcare facilities which receive CMS funding to follow the 2012 edition of the NFPA-101 Life Safety Code. Many health care facilities may have fire extinguishers which are currently non-compliant and have begun failing surveys for the new CMS requirements.

OVAL Brand offers a simple solution saving time, effort, and money. OVAL Brand’s low-profile fire extinguishers are the only fire extinguishers which may be surface mounted in the corridors of healthcare facilities while maintaining compliance with both the NFPA-101 Life Safety Code (2012 edition) and ADA, as required by CMS. Only OVAL Brand fire extinguishers project less than 4 inches when surface mounted. Plus, the patented hook nearly guarantees that they do not fall off the wall when bumped into.

A facility may be told by surveyors and fire extinguisher technicians that they need to install recessed fire extinguisher cabinets to remedy the 4” projection limit in corridors. However, many are not being told about OVAL Brand fire extinguishers being a compliant solution as well, simply because our low-profile fire extinguishers are new to the market. OVAL brand fire extinguishers is a much cleaner, quicker, and less expensive option. To achieve compliance, recessed cabinets are not necessary when OVAL low-profile fire extinguishers can be surface mounted.

Becoming compliant with NFPA-101 Life Safety Code (2012 EDITION) Projecting Objects Rules is easy with OVAL Brand low-profile fire extinguishers saving you TIME, MONEY, AND MORE.  There may be many things that must be accomplished in order to become fully compliant with the multitude of facility requirements recently imposed by CMS, so let OVAL Brand fire extinguishers quickly and easily solve one item on your list.

What Are The Requirements

Compliance with the NFPA-101 Life Safety Code (2012 edition) and ADA is now required by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Many healthcare facilities (hospitals, senior living, nursing home, assisted living, ambulatory care, etc.) may have challenges meeting the new requirements, particularly with their surface mounted fire extinguishers.

Medicare and Medicaid Programs; Fire Safety Requirements for Certain Health Care Facilities - Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), HHS - SECTIONS 18.2.3.4(2) AND 19.2.3.4(2)—CORRIDOR PROJECTIONS

This provision requires noncontinuous projections to be no more than 6 inches from the corridor wall. In addition to following the requirements of the LSC, health care facilities must comply with the requirements of the ADA, including the requirements for protruding objects. The 2010 Standards for Accessible Design (2010 Standards) generally limit the protrusion of wall-mounted objects into corridors to no more than 4 inches from the wall when the object's leading edge is located more than 27 inches, but not more than 80 inches, above the floor. See Sections 204.1 and 307 of the 2010 Standards, This requirement protects persons who are blind or have low vision from being injured by bumping into a protruding object that they cannot detect with a cane.

Although the LSC allows 6-inch projections, under the ADA, objects mounted above 27 inches and no more than 80 inches high can only protrude a maximum of 4 inches into the corridor beyond a detectable surface mounted less than 27 inches above the floor (except for certain handrails which may protrude up to 41/2″). See section 307 of the 2010 standards for requirements for handrails and post-mounted objects. CMS intends to provide technical assistance regarding strategies for how to avoid noncompliance with the ADA's protruding objects requirement, as well as how to modify non-compliant protruding objects.

Who Benefits

ARCHITECTS
Get fire extinguishers worthy of their design

The Architect’s Problem

In order to fully recess a fire extinguisher cabinet into a standard wall, the fire extinguisher must be no more than 3 inches deep. The average round fire extinguisher, however, requires 6 inch wall studs or 10 inch masonry in order to fully recess the cabinet.

The OVAL Solution

With OVAL, a fully recessed, fire rated fire extinguisher cabinet can fit into a standard 3-5/8 inch studded wall. A fully recessed, non-fire rated fire extinguisher cabinet can fit into a slim 2-1/2 inch studded partition and 6 inch masonry. Flush, fully recessed, fire extinguisher cabinets can now be installed within standard 3-5/8″ stud framing and 6″ concrete masonry units.

oval fire extinguishers for architectsAn architect’s best designed projects are those where form meets function, with clean lines, that are well balanced, and have an enthusiastic client. But when fire extinguisher cabinets protrude from the walls those clean lines are broken and the result is less than elegant…Not what the architect or the client envisioned.

In order to fully recess a fire extinguisher cabinet into a standard wall, the fire extinguisher must be no more than 3 inches deep for standard wall construction. The average round fire extinguisher, however, requires 6 inch wall studs or 10 inch masonry in order to fully recess the cabinet.

With OVAL Brand Fire Products, fire extinguisher cabinets can be fully recessed in standard wall construction will never need to protrude from a wall again!

OVAL Brand Fire Products is helping architects make their designs their absolute best.

HEALTHCARE FACILITIES
Now have access to the FIRST and ONLY fire extinguishers built for NFPA-101 Life Safety Code compliance

The Healthcare Facility’s Problem

Healthcare, hospital, ambulatory, long-term care, nursing home and senior living facilities must now comply with the 2012 edition of NFPA-101. Noncontinuous projections in corridors located below 38” are now limited to 4-1/2”. Projections above 38” are limited to no more than 4” per ADA and CMS. Most fire extinguishers, if surface mounted, do not comply with the new requirements.

The OVAL Solution

OVAL Brand Fire Products is proud to introduce the first and only fire extinguisher built for both NFPA-101 and ADA compliance, as required by CMS. By flattening the tank into a low-profile shape, OVAL has created a fire extinguisher that projects less than 4″ from the wall. OVAL Brand fire extinguishers can be mounted at the required locations and still remain compliant. OVAL Brand are the only fire extinguishers that comply with the recently updated NFPA-101 Life Safety Code (2012 edition), ADA, and CMS requirements when surface mounted in corridors.

Due to the recently issued requirements by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), OVAL Brand’s low profile fire extinguishers are the only fire extinguishers which may be surface mounted in the corridors of healthcare facilities while maintaining compliance with the NFPA-101 Life Safety Code (2012 edition) and the ADA. All other brands’ 5 lb and 10 lb fire extinguishers protrude more than 4-1/2” when surface mounted, however OVAL’s UL listed fire extinguishers project less than 4” and are always compliant.

OVAL fire extinguishers may be either mounted on a wall or column or installed in a fire extinguisher cabinet. In either case, the installation facilitates compliance with ADA, NFPA-101, and CMS requirements.

oval fire extinguisher surface mount

Surface Mounting - Surface mounted fire extinguishers are furnished with a patented swivel mounting hook for exposed mounting on a wall or column. The fire extinguisher projects 3 ½” from the wall surface. The unique swivel hook assures that, if the fire extinguisher is accidentally bumped or hit, it will swivel out of the way rather than be damaged or dislodged from the wall or column.

Cabinet Mounting - Fire extinguishers may also be installed in a recessed cabinet (supplied separately). Fire extinguishers for cabinet mounting are 3” deep. OVAL recessed cabinets fit into 2 ½” and 3 ⅝” stud walls and 6” masonry walls. OVAL fire-rated cabinets fit into 3 ⅝” stud walls. With OVAL fire extinguishers and cabinets, it is no longer necessary to build an extra deep wall just for the fire extinguisher.

Many facilities currently have their fire extinguishers installed within recessed or semi recessed cabinets, and therefore they don’t have a compliance problem. However there are many older hospitals and facilities such as senior living, assisted living, long-term care, ambulatory care, and rehab which utilize surface mounted fire extinguishers. They currently have two viable options to solve their non-compliance with the LSC non-continuous object projecting object limits. Their first option is to install new fully-recessed or semi-recessed cabinets into their existing walls. The second option (which is also less invasive, fastest, cleanest, and less expensive) is to surface mount new OVAL Brand fire extinguishers.

INSPECTORS
Agree OVAL fire extinguishers are built for compliance

The Problem identified by Inspectors

ADA guidelines, ANSI A117.1, ICC A117.1, and IBC Chapter 11 accessible design standards. require that fire extinguishers be mounted 48” or less above the floor and project 4” or less into an aisle or walkway. When a standard round fire extinguisher is installed at the required height, it projects more than 4” into the aisle. This type of installation simply cannot comply with current requirements.

The OVAL Solution

OVAL Brand fire extinguishers are the first and only fire extinguishers built for code compliance. By flattening the tank into a low-profile shape, OVAL has created a fire extinguisher that projects less than 4” from the wall. The fire extinguisher can be mounted at the required height and still keep aisles and walkways clear. Compliance with ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), International Fire Code (IFC), ANSI/ICC A117.1, and NFPA-101 Life Safety Code (2012 edition) is easy with OVAL.oval fire extinguisher

oval fire extinguisherOVAL’s 10 LB portable dry chemical fire extinguishers are less than 4 inches deep, when measured front to back. This unique quality enables easy compliance with the ADA’s 4 inch protruding object limit. The 4 inch protrusion rule was implemented primarily to protect people who are blind or have low vision.

The 2010 ADA standards, which went into effect in 2012, also require that accessible fixed building elements such as coat hooks and fire extinguisher hooks be no higher than 48 inches. Many retailers install fire extinguisher hooks higher than 48 inches so that they avoid collisions with shopping carts.

Many state and local building codes also require compliance with the ANSI A117.1, ICC A117.1, and/or IBC Chapter 11 accessible design standards. These standards also limit the protruding object depth to 4 inches and the installation height to 48 inches. Ontario, Canada, is enforcing the same protruding object limits under the AODA.

The IFC® INTERNATIONAL FIRE CODE® also states “Section 1003.3.3 Horizontal projections. Structural elements, fixtures or furnishings shall not project horizontally from either side more than 4 inches (102 mm) over any walking surface between the heights of 27 inches (686 mm) and 80 inches (2032 mm) above the walking surface.” Only OVAL Brand fire extinguishers always comply with the IFC Section 1003.3.3 protruding object guidelines as they are applied to surface mounted fire extinguisher sizes 5 lbs and larger.

Only OVAL provides a fire extinguisher solution which always complies with the ADA and local building code for protruding object limits when installed in accordance with both NFPA 10 and the ADA. OVAL fire extinguishers, when bumped into, do not easily fall off their hooks either.

OVAL is the safer, more responsible, solution for your facilities and the people in them.

The following guidelines should be used when fire extinguishers and/or fire extinguisher cabinets are located in public accommodations and commercial facilities subject to Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA):

Wall Projections (Protrusions) - ADA Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) specify that objects projecting from walls with their leading edges between 27″ and 80″ above the finished floor shall protrude no more than 4″ into walks, corridors, passageways, or aisles. Objects mounted with their leading edges at or below 27″ may protrude any amount.

Mounting Heights - ADA Guidelines specify reach ranges for building occupants who require access to equipment such as fire extinguishers and other fire safety devices.

For an unobstructed approach, the maximum forward reach to this equipment (for example, the fire extinguisher handle) is 48 inches above the floor. The maximum side reach for such an approach is also 48 inches (as of year 2012). The actual mounting heights for cabinets housing this equipment can be determined by reviewing the exact dimensions of the specified cabinet and the positioning of the fire equipment within that cabinet. Please note that these ADAAG reach range requirements fall with the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines. The NFPA guidelines state that the distance from the floor to the top of the fire extinguisher to be no more than 5 feet, however the federal ADA guidelines should be followed as well.

GENERAL CONTRACTORS and BUILDING OWNERS
Get fully recessed fire extinguisher cabinets without reducing rentable space

The General Contractor’s and Building Owner’s Problem

Architects often design buildings with flush mounted doors on all fire extinguisher cabinets, however it is not physically possible to recess a round fire extinguisher into a standard 3-5/8″ stud framing. To remedy the design problem, either the wall type needs to be changed to a 6″ stud depth or the cabinet needs to be changed to a semi-recessed type (projecting from 1-1/2″ to 4″).

General Contractors can easily install fully recessed, flush cabinets into standard 3-5/8″ stud framing and 6″ concrete masonry units (CMU). Building Owners realize an increased rentable square footage with standard 3-5/8″ stud framing and flush cabinets, saving 3 square feet or more per fire extinguisher location.

In order to fully recess a fire extinguisher cabinet into a standard wall, the fire extinguisher must be no more than 3 inches deep. The average round fire extinguisher, however, requires 6 inch wall studs or 10 inch masonry in order to fully recess the cabinet.

When round fire extinguishers are used, deeper walls decrease usable square footage across a floor plan. For example, to allow for a flush cabinet (prior to the OVAL Brand extinguisher) an average of 15 lineal feet of wall would need to change from 3-5/8″ stud framing to 6″ stud framing, thus reducing the usable floor area by 3 SF.

With OVAL Brand Fire Products, fire extinguisher cabinets will never need to protrude from a wall again!

OVAL Brand Fire Products is helping to make your buildings look their absolute best. Designing your projects with OVAL brand fire extinguishers will allow you to maximize rentable square footage while allowing your fire extinguishers to recess fully into the walls.

RETAILERS
Satisfy Fire Safety Code while keeping the aisles clear

The Retailer’s Problem

Many retail spaces are currently in violation of the protruding object regulations required not only by the ADA, but the International Fire Code and local building codes as well. These guidelines require that fire extinguishers be mounted 48” or less above the floor and project 4” or less into an aisle or walkway. When a standard round fire extinguisher is installed at the required height, it projects more than 4” into the aisle. The installation cannot comply with ADA, IFC and local building code requirements.

The OVAL Solution

OVAL Brand’s low-profile fire extinguishers are the industry’s only 10-lb fire extinguishers which protrude less than 4 inches when surface mounted, thus being the only fire extinguishers which always comply with the protruding object limits no matter the height of installation. OVAL Brand fire extinguishers can be mounted at the required height and still keep aisles clear. Column mounted OVAL Brand fire extinguishers are always compliant, and injuries from falling fire extinguishers are greatly reduced with OVAL Brand’s button hook.

oval fire extinguisherMost retail stores are currently in violation of the protruding object requirements of the ADA, the International Fire Code and local building codes. The reason being previously existing options were not tenable. With OVAL fire extinguishers, retailers now have a safe, practical solution to this serious issue.

OVAL Brand low-profile fire extinguishers are the industry’s only 10-lb fire extinguishers which protrude less than 4 inches when surface mounted, thus being the only fire extinguishers which always complies with the protruding object limits no matter the height of installation.

Disturbingly, many national retailers are deficient in the required quantity of fire extinguishers installed in their stores by as much as 30%. Many stores rely upon 5-lb fire extinguishers with either a 2-A or 3-A rating, and they struggle to find suitable locations for fire extinguisher installations. 2-A & 3-A rated fire extinguishers are limited in their allowable square feet of coverage, often requiring more than one fire extinguisher within every 75 feet.

OVAL Brand’s 10-lb fire extinguishers’ 4-A rating, when used within Ordinary Hazard Occupancy, meets all relevant regulations for class A hazards, ensuring adequate protection when installed within 75 feet of travel distance for access.

For retailers currently using 5-lb fire extinguishers, our 10-lb fire extinguishers reduce the number of fire extinguishers required to be purchased, installed, and maintained.

Retailers can minimize significant risks to their brand and bottom line by complying with federal mandates. Individual or class action complaints related to not being ADA compliant can occur. Negative news/word-of-mouth hurts when directly linked to a retailer’s brand if associated with not meeting code and/or safety requirements. Currently fire extinguishers can easily fall from standard hooks and brackets when bumped. Even heavy duty brackets, if used, get damaged, bent, and often fail to securely hold a fire extinguisher resulting in a damaged unit when it hits the floor or a lawsuit if it lands on a child’s or adult’s foot. The OVAL Brand “Button Hook” dramatically increases safety by significantly reducing the likelihood of the fire extinguisher being bumped from, or knocked off, its hook. Only OVAL’s button hook allows an extinguisher’s vertical axis to rotate nearly 180 degrees, side to side, without disengaging from its mount and falling. Safety is increased and accessibility is still maintained.

INSURANCE PROVIDERS
Clients see reductions in injuries with the use of the world’s safest fire extinguisher support hook

The Problem faced by Insurance Providers

The previous state of the art for fire extinguisher wall hooks and hangers significantly lacks long-term durability and aesthetics. Many injuries occur each year due to flimsy mounting hooks, where the fire extinguisher affixed to the wall becomes easily dislodged and falls.

The OVAL Solution

The OVAL Brand button hook allows OVAL Brand fire extinguishers to rotate around the button hook nearly 180 degrees, side to side, without the fire extinguisher easily disengaging from the hook and falling.  If one simply grabs the handle and lifts, the OVAL Brand fire extinguisher still easily releases from the button hook.

The OVAL Brand button hook improves overall fire extinguisher safety by drastically reducing the likelihood of OVAL Brand fire extinguishers being bumped or knocked off the hook.

In addition, the OVAL Brand button hook significantly helps in preventing surface-mounted fire extinguishers from falling to the floor, which can cause serious personal injury and damage the fire extinguisher. OVAL Brand hooks can help companies to reduce claims resulting from fire extinguishers falling on their patrons’ toes.
